Receding Gums: Causes and Treatment

Have you noticed that your gums may not be as healthy that they once were, or that they seem to be receding away from your teeth? This is a problem known as gingival recession. Receding gums lead to pockets of space between your teeth and gums. Bacteria quickly find their way into these little pockets and cause decay and disease, which can ultimately lead to tooth or bone loss. The problem can be caused by excessive brushing, genetics, teeth grinding, or a lack of good dental hygiene.

The video below offers more guidance on what you can do if you need treatment for gum recession:

Transcript:

“Gum recession is a serious condition that needs the close supervision of a dental professional. The gums protect the sensitive roots of teeth. When the gums recede, complications can arise, such as sensitivity to hot and cold and root cavities. This may be due to irregular tooth position, trauma, heredity, or periodontal disease. If gum recession is ignored, then continued recession can be expected, and tooth loss is possible. Treatments include a special cleaning called scaling and root planing, and surgery known as gum grafting. Gum grafting helps cover exposed roots, reduce the risk of further recession, and enhance the appearance of the gum line. Brush twice a day and floss once a day and schedule regular dental checkups. Prevention is the key to stopping gum recession.”
