What is the Difference Between Dental Implants and a Bridge?

How Much do Dental Implants Cost?

A Timeline for Dental Implants

Dental implants are one of the most popular treatment options that we provide to fix missing or chipped teeth. While many questions arise during conversations about dental implants, one of the most common is: What is the difference between dental implants and a bridge?

Bridges

Bridges are a common way to treat problems including missing or chipped teeth. The bridge is made of porcelain and is fused to a piece of metal. A bridge, composed of two dental crowns, attaches to artificial teeth. False teeth are created in between the two crowns.

During a traditional dental bridge treatment, a patient comes in for two visits. During the first visit, we prepare the two anchoring (abutment) teeth and create a mold for the bridge. To prepare the teeth, we remove a portion of the enamel so that we can fit a crown over top. We then take impressions for the bridge, pontic, and crowns.

At the second visit, we check the fit and then adjust and cement the bridge to ensure a strong, long-lasting fit. More visits may be required if patients experience an ongoing problem with the fit of the bridge. Most patients can expect bridges to last between 5-15 years.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are tiny titanium objects placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The jawbone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for the new tooth. They are the go-to permanent solution for missing teeth, and they can last a lifetime if cared for properly.

That can’t be said of bridges. Furthermore, Dental implants do not need to be removed like dentures, sparing you the embarrassment of having to remove dentures before eating. Implants don’t rely on other teeth for placement, like a bridge, and they do not impact speech or eating.
