While many people have experienced getting a filling for a cavity, most people don’t know that cavities aren’t the only crevices that we fill in a dental office. Another possible crevice that needs filling, at times, is known as an abfraction lesion.
An abfraction lesion is similar to a cavity in that it results in the loss of tooth structure. These lesions are often caused by mechanical stress from chewing or grinding one’s teeth. Acid erosion from a poor diet and poor dental hygiene habits can also contribute to the problem.
When the lesion starts to extend below the gum line or exposes the pulp or nerves of a tooth, a dentist will typically step in to treat the problem with a filling. Filling the lesion ensures that it doesn’t deepen or spread over time and put more of your mouth at risk for serious dental damage.
