Dental implants are often an excellent option for patients with chipped, missing, or heavily decayed teeth. The implants themselves are tiny titanium objects placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The jawbone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for the new tooth. They are the go-to permanent solution for missing teeth, and they can last a lifetime if cared for properly.
The Sinus Lift procedure is undertaken when the bone barrier between your teeth and the maxillary sinuses, located behind your cheeks and above your upper teeth, is too thin. Dental implants need bone to hold them in place. It is not possible to place dental implants in this bone if it is too thin.
During a sinus lift (also known as a sinus lift graft) a surgeon inserts bone into the floor of the sinus. After several months of healing, the bone becomes part of the patient’s jaw and dental implants can be inserted and stabilized in this new sinus bone.
Sometimes, the implants can be implanted in the same procedure. Sinus grafts now make it possible for many patients to have dental implants when, years ago, there was no other option besides wearing loose dentures.
