Our bodies are incredibly efficient at protecting themselves from harm. Our skin acts as a protective barrier for our organs, our skull protects our brain from trauma, and our mouths protect our head and neck from external bacteria and infection.
When harmful bacteria enter the mouth and cause a significant infection, pus will form around the infection as a response from our bodies. When the pus can’t get out, an abscess forms so that the bacteria won’t emerge and spread to cause harm to the rest of our bodies.
When an abscess occurs in a tooth, it’s known as a periapical abscess, as opposed to a periodontal abscess, which occurs when an abscess forms in the gums. An abscess can be quite painful and can lead to more significant problems if not treated promptly by a dentist.
If the abscess isn’t treated, it won’t go away. Instead, it will find a way to let the pus out, eventually forming a tunnel between the root of your teeth and surrounding bone. This drainage tunnel is called a fistula and often resembles a pimple. Leaving a fistula untreated can result in the growth of cysts, tooth removal, and/or spread of the infection to other parts of your body.
Our dental team can drain the tooth and remove the infection in order to treat the abscess. If you have any questions about a periapical abscessed tooth or if you would like to schedule a free consultation, please contact our team or make an appointment. Our incredible staff will give you the best dental care possible.
