We work extremely hard to ensure that we treat the whole patient, which means that we care deeply not just about correcting a significant oral health problem, but also about promoting good oral health care at home. The American Dental Association has identified nine types of foods as the most damaging to our teeth. These foods promote acid-producing bacteria, break down enamel, and/or can lead to decay and disease if not used in moderation.
Number Five: Coffee
For millions of people across the country, coffee is a magic elixir that cannot be replaced. However, while coffee might offer some benefits, it’s important to keep in mind how coffee can damage dental health. Due to the fact that coffee is acidic, it’s worse for your teeth than other beverages, such as water, which typically has a neutral pH. Drinks that are more acidic can erode enamel over time. Furthermore, coffee is known to stain teeth if consumed on a regular basis for a long period. Many people also add sugar to coffee, which can increase the potential for significant damage even further.
If you’re going to consume coffee, it’s important to drink water afterward to clear the acid and sugar off of your teeth as soon as possible.
