Over the last decade plus, there have been a wide variety of teeth whitening products that have hit the marketplace, available at both the dentist’s office, at any nearby Walmart or Target store, or on Amazon.com. Many patients experience more sensitivity and gum irritation after using these products and shortly thereafter raise questions about the ultimate safety of the process.
The American Dental Association has been studying teeth whitening for a long time and defines the process with the following language: “Whitening” is any process that will make teeth appear whiter. This can be achieved in two ways. A product can bleach the tooth, which means that it actually changes the natural tooth color. Bleaching products contain peroxide(s) that help remove deep (intrinsic) and surface (extrinsic) stains. By contrast, non-bleaching whitening products contain agents that work by physical or chemical action to help remove surface stains only.”
The ADA has given the ‘Seal of Acceptance’ to some whitening products available at the dentist’s office. Many of these products have the recommended amount of hydrogen peroxide, typically in the range of 25-40%. (It should be noted that since teeth whitening products are not drugs, they are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, and not all products seek the ADA seal of acceptance. A consultation with your dentist is always the best option before committing to a treatment plan.)
We offer Zoom! and KöR Whitening products in our office and will schedule follow-up consultations to ensure that your teeth and gums are reacting positively to the whitening treatment.
There are also a variety of ways to ensure that your teeth stay naturally whiter throughout your life, including choosing the right food and drinks on a regular basis.
