Pregnancy is quite a unique time for women across the world. For many, it’s a period of intense fulfillment and delight. For others, it is a long road filled with a myriad of health problems. For every woman, significant hormonal changes cause a variety of different symptoms and problems that can arise. There are three main problems that hormones can cause in your mouth:
1. Increased Acidity
Morning sickness affects many women and can bring up unwanted and extra acid into the mouth, which can erode teeth over time. Gastric reflux or heartburn is a sign that there might be additional acid floating around your teeth. If that’s the case, it’s important to practice even better oral hygiene, brush frequently, and rinse your mouth with water after each meal, drink, or snack.
2. Pregnancy Gingivitis
Hormonal changes also lead to increased swelling of the gums. In some women, this can lead to pregnancy gingivitis, which can cause bleeding and other problems. If you notice swelling and bleeding, see your dentist. We may recommend more frequent teeth cleanings, among other options.
3. Pregnancy Tumors
While these type of tumors are not cancerous or malignant, they cause problems through additional swelling. According to the American Dental Association, these areas look like raspberries and are often the source of abnormal bleeding. As with many hormonal changes during pregnancy, the problem should go away once the baby is delivered.
