One of our primary goals is to educate patients on how to prevent problems with their teeth and how to lead a healthier life. We believe in the power of prevention and, therefore, want to point out the biggest risks to your oral health so that you can be armed with more information that you can use to potentially make better choices in your life.
Obesity
Doctors frequently recommend patients to lose weight if they’re considered overweight or obese. New research published by the State University of New York at Buffalo finds that obesity can also be a predictor of periodontal disease. If not treated quickly and properly, periodontal disease can cause the loss of bone and entire teeth in the mouth. According to the researchers, “severity of periodontal disease increased proportionally with increasing insulin resistance.” In the end, it appears that this research points to the notion that losing weight might be good for your oral health, as well.
