It’s no surprise that dental problems can emerge from a variety of places: the wrong foods, genetics, a chipped tooth from a football game that results in a root canal in the future. One of the most important things we can do as practitioners is to help patients engage with and deeply understand their own health, including why these problems emerge and what we can to do treat them. It’s for this effort that we examine the nine most common dental problems that we see on a regular basis.
Problem One: Acid Erosion
Acid erosion, sometimes referred to as tooth erosion, occurs when acid in the mouth wears down the enamel of the tooth over time. Enamel is not something that can be replenished and when it’s gone, it can’t protect teeth as well, so the erosion presents a significant problem to oral health. Patients typically notice erosion when teeth become sensitive, discolored, or even crack. Unfortunately, there isn’t a treatment we can offer to restore enamel, but there are several steps that can be taken to protect your enamel in the first place.
