As dentists, we help patients navigate their health in a variety of areas by offering examinations, treatments, and the support needed to make healthy decisions about oral health. From dental implants to Invisalign, Lumineers to treatments for sleeping disorders and beyond, we help patients live a healthier life through excellent dentistry. That said, it often surprises patients to learn that our comprehensive approach to oral health also includes the tongue, which is closely analyzed every time we perform a thorough examination. When we look at the tongue, we may be looking for one of these five common problems that can emerge in patients:
Problem Five: Tongue Cancer
The most serious tongue problem of all is tongue cancer. The tongue is divided into two parts: the first 2/3 of the tongue, called the oral tongue, and the back third, which is called the tongue base. When we refer to tongue cancer, we’re referencing cancer in the oral part of the tongue (cancer of the tongue base is actually referred to as oropharyngeal cancer).
One of the most important things that we check for whenever we perform a cleaning or examination are signs of oral and tongue cancer, which include red or white blemishes, the presence of a sore throat, and pain from the jaw or tongue area, among others. If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, it’s important to communicate that to your dentist so that he or she can perform a more thorough exam of the tongue, throat, cheeks, roof/ floor of the mouth, and neck lymph nodes.
As with any type of cancer, it’s incredibly important to catch it sooner rather than later so that more treatment options are potentially available.
