As dentists, we help patients navigate their health in a variety of areas by offering examinations, treatments, and the support needed to make healthy decisions about oral health. From dental implants to Invisalign, Lumineers to treatments for sleeping disorders and beyond, we help patients live a healthier life through excellent dentistry. That said, it often surprises patients to learn that our comprehensive approach to oral health also includes the tongue, which is closely analyzed every time we perform a thorough examination. When we look at the tongue, we may be looking for one of these five common problems that can emerge in patients:
Problem Four: Macroglossia
A rare but potentially troublesome condition in which the tongue is abnormally large is commonly known as Macroglossia. Macroglossia typically occurs due to a buildup of extra tissue on the tongue rather than from a more malignant source, such as a tumor. The condition tends to be inherited and is often present with patients that suffer from acromegaly, congenital hypothyroidism, diabetes, down syndrome, or other genetic conditions. The presence of Macroglossia can result in abnormal breathing noises, increased snoring, or trouble eating and swallowing.
If you have any questions about Macroglossia or if you would like to schedule a free consultation, please contact our team or make an appointment. Our incredible staff will give you the best dental care possible.
