Problem Three: Geographic Tongue
Although many patients that experience geographic tongue become alarmed when they see the inflamed, smooth, red lesions across their tongue, geographic tongue is a benign condition that doesn’t post any significant threat to anyone’s dental health.
Researchers haven’t yet confirmed exactly what causes geographic tongue, but we know that it occurs randomly and in different spots on the tongue at different times, creating a “map-like” effect on the tongue.
Some people experience minor pain from geographic tongue in the presence of sweets, acids, or spicy foods. However, most people with geographic tongue report no significant problems with pain from the condition. Geographic tongue is not associate with cancer or infection.
