Smoking May Lead to Problems with Dental Implants

How Long Do Dental Implants Take to Heal?

How Much do Dental Implants Cost?

While we’ve been performing the dental implant procedure for several years and have witnessed a high rate of success, there are certain risk factors that can decrease the success rate and lead to dental implant failure over time. Smoking is one of the most significant of these risk factors.

Research shows that while smoking doesn’t guarantee failure, it is associated with decreased rates of success. In fact, “clinical trials of endosseous implants consistently rate smoking as a primary patient-centered risk factor for implant loss.”

The problems may be twofold:  Smoking can weaken the bone structure around the implant. It’s essential for the jawbone around the implant to be in great health, as the implant itself fuses with the bone in a process known as osseointegration. If this fusion doesn’t happen correctly, researchers hypothesize that the rate of failure can be dramatically impacted. Other researchers claim that the exposure of tissue to smoke is the most problematic effect.

Ultimately, research shows that smoking before, during, or immediately after a dental implant procedure clearly plays a major role. A research study of 66 patients performed in Spain found that the failure rate in a group of smokers was 15.8%, while the failure rate in nonsmokers was a mere 1.4%.
