Is Seltzer Water Bad for Dental Health?

Seniors Guide to Dentistry: Uneven Jawbone

How Harmful is Mouth Bacteria?

Seltzer water has become incredibly popular in the last few years, with both small and major brands alike launching a wide variety of carbonated, flavored seltzer water available at nearly any grocery store.

We can say with confidence that seltzer water is better for teeth than soda alternatives, which contain an incredibly high amount of sugar and is very acidic. Both of those qualities make soda very harmful to the enamel of teeth. Sugar serves as a major breeding ground for bacteria, which emit acid that can eat away at the enamel in your mouth. Once the enamel wears away, decay sets in and gum disease and other problems can arise, as a result.

A potential problem with seltzer water emerges from the carbonation that is present. Carbonation makes seltzer water more acidic than normal water (which has a neutral pH of 7.0). However, even though seltzer water is acidic, it isn’t nearly as acidic or potentially problematic as traditional soda choices.

The best idea when drinking seltzer water is to drink it quickly and not let the carbonation and acid linger on your teeth. It’s also a good idea to rinse out your mouth with water after drinking anything that is acidic, which includes seltzer water, soda, coffee, tea, wine, and more.
