Can Selfies Lead to Better Oral Health?

How Long Does Pericoronitis Last?

Can Medications Cause Tooth Decay?

While selfies have taken over the pages of Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and beyond, there appears that there is a new reason for people to take pictures and videos of themselves. According to a new study published by Case Western Reserve University, patients who filmed themselves brushing at home improved their accuracy, number of strokes, and overall effectiveness.

“Often, tooth-brushing is learned and practiced without proper supervision,” said Lance T. Vernon, a senior instructor at the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine and co-author of the study. “Changing tooth brushing behaviors — which are ingrained habits tied to muscle memory — can take a lot of time and guidance.”

The researchers hypothesized that the act of becoming more self-aware of brushing techniques enabled people to improve their skills and muscle memory for good brushing behavior.

Implications are that patients can further share videos of brushing technique with dentists and hygienists to learn better habits and techniques to improve their overall dental health.
