Sensitive teeth can certainly be an incredibly irritating problem to have, as it can impact the way you eat, drink, and live your life. Patients with significantly sensitive teeth often have worn tooth enamel or exposed roots, leading to increased sensitivity when brushing, flossing, eating, or drinking. Sensitivity can also arise from cracked teeth or excessive grinding. If there is an underlying problem causing the sensitivity, we can certainly treat that appropriately. But there are also other options for patients with minor sensitivity and discomfort.

“If you experience pain when you brush or floss, or if hot or cold foods hurt your teeth, you are not alone. You may have a common problem called dentin hypersensitivity, or sensitive teeth. This usually happens at the gum line or chewing surface of the tooth. It can happen when gum tissue recedes around the tooth, or when the enamel is worn away, resulting in the dentin being exposed. To help reduce discomfort, your dentist may recommend a toothpaste for sensitive teeth. Desensitizing toothpaste contains potassium. Potassium is thought to help desensitize your teeth to hot and cold liquids and foods by decreasing the excitability of nerves in your teeth. Be sure to use toothpaste with the ADA seal of acceptance. That helps ensure that you’re receiving a quality product. If you have questions or concerns, speak with your dentist.”
