Have you ever had a cavity? The answer, for most people, is a resounding yes, as cavities are one of the most common ailments in dentistry. If you’re one of the rare people who have yet to have a filling, you may be wondering what you can expect when it comes to the filling procedure. It’s a simple process that enables patients to fix the problem a cavity poses in a reasonably pain-free manner. Dental fillings can last for years and composite fillings can even appear as real as your natural teeth.

“Unlike other areas of your body, once a tooth develops a cavity, it can’t heal itself. But, the sooner you seek treatment for a cavity, there will be less work that needs to be done, so you’ll want to visit a dentist as soon as possible to have your cavity filled. Your dentist or hygienist will first numb the area with local anesthetic. She’ll then clear away the decay with a high-speed drill or laser, and shape the hold to support your new filling. Your tooth may be repaired with two different materials. The most common filling materials are amalgam and composite. An amalgam filling is a durable metal that appears silver in color and is best suited for areas that won’t be seen by most people. A composite filling is a tooth-colored resin plastic that blends in well with natural teeth. Once your tooth is filled with the best material for the job, your dentist will adjust the filling to make sure it’s comfortable when you bite down…With regular dental care, your filling should serve you well for years to come.”
