Eight Steps to a More Beautiful Smile (Part Five)

Patient’s Dental Dictionary: Bruxism

How Long Does Pericoronitis Last?

We think everyone deserves a more beautiful smile, but maybe not for the reasons you may think. Smiles don’t just have vanity appeal. Smiles can make a big impact on our confidence and interactions with others, which has downstream effects on things such as job satisfaction, relationships, and other essential parts of a healthy, happy life.

Some people require significant dental treatments to restore their smiles to their original beauty. Other patients need to simply maintain their current state of health to keep a beautiful smile intact. Whether you got your smile through a series of advanced procedures or by consistently practicing good oral hygiene over many years, there are eight steps you can take to ensure that your smile stays beautiful for a long time.

Part Five: Limit High Sugar Snacks and Beverages

When it comes to food and your teeth, there are two major enemies: sugar and frequency. Sugary snacks and beverages harm your teeth by creating an environment that enables acid-producing bacteria to thrive. The acid that these bacteria produce can erode your enamel and lead to advanced gum disease, which is a significant problem.

The other enemy is frequency. The more often you eat or drink, the more often your teeth come into contact with substances that can harm them, such as acid and sugar. Sipping on a sugary beverage or sucking on a sugar-filled candy for a long period of time increases the period in which your teeth are covered by sugar, which can be harmful over time.

If you choose to snack or drink frequently, it’s best to choose items that are low in sugar and to rinse with water or chew sugar-free gum after you’re finished.
