We all want healthier teeth and know that brushing twice per day, flossing regularly, and visiting the dentist will help us achieve greater oral health. We’d like to add 6 foods to the list of things you can do to gain healthier teeth and a brighter smile.
1. Cheese
Cheese is low in acidity and sugar, and high in calcium and casein, a protein that’s useful for strengthening the surface of your teeth.
2. Celery
Raw vegetables require plenty of chewing, which produces a greater amount of saliva to prevent bacterial growth. Celery is even better than other raw vegetables because it contains long fibers that can actually clean teeth as you chew.
3. Tap Water
Most tap water in the United States (about 67%) contains enough fluoride to help prevent tooth decay. Fluoride is beneficial because it mineralizes teeth, which can reverse the damage caused by acid, which acts to strip away tooth enamel.
4. Pears
Fresh fruit (not dried) also stimulates the production of more saliva, a benefit to your oral health. Furthermore, a 2004 dental study found that pears are even better than other fruits at neutralizing the pH, or acidity of your mouth.
5. Yogurt
Yogurt also contains casein and adds calcium and phosphates to stimulate remineralization, leading to enhanced oral health.
6. Sesame Oil
Sesame seeds have been known to reduce oral plaque and remineralize teeth enamel. Rinsing with sesame oil can also reduce the bacterial count in your mouth, leading to less decay.
