Brushing our teeth is one of the most redundant, yet important things that we do every single day. In fact, the average person will spend over 75 whole days brushing their teeth over the course of their lifetime, if they brush for two minutes a day from the time they are three years old.
Ensuring that this important act of health maintenance is as good as it can be is essential for quality dental health care. However, there are some common mistakes that many people make that can hamper our efforts to keep our mouths as clean as possible.
1. Not brushing long enough – everyone should brush for at least 2 minutes twice per day, dividing the mouth into four sections that each receive 30 seconds of care.
2. Brushing too hard – Brushing too hard or more than three times per day can actually have a detrimental effect on your enamel, wearing it down and exposing your teeth to potential decay.
3. Using the same toothbrush for too long – We should all replace our toothbrushes every 3-4 months to ensure that the bristles don’t lose their flexibility or fray apart.
4. Not letting your brush air dry – While some toothbrushes have covers, it’s actually a good idea to let your toothbrush air dry so that harmful bacteria don’t have a moist place to grow and proliferate.
