One of the more obvious and common questions we get is: Do dental implants hurt at any point?
One important thing to remember is that the procedure takes place in distinct steps. After an initial consultation, we typically prepare the tooth, gum, and jawbone for the implant, which may include grafting. When the site is ready, we place the dental implant and continue to monitor the process while the area heals. Once the healing process reaches a specific stage, we place the final crown.
Patients should expect soreness after the procedure. As with any treatment, there is the possibility of swelling, bruising, bleeding, and pain at the site of the procedure. If this occurs, we can prescribe pain medication or antibiotics to ease the symptoms, although patients are often comfortable with mild pain medications, such as Tylenol or Advil. We also use a mix of anesthetic and sedation to ensure comfort throughout the process.
The important thing to remember is that, while every patient is different and will experience unique amounts of pain, we strive to provide the best treatment possible throughout the entire process of placing dental implants.
