Are Dental Implants Permanent?

How Safe Are Dental Implants?

What Does the Dental Implant Procedure Look Like?

Dental implants are replacement teeth that look, feel and function like natural teeth. The implants themselves are tiny titanium objects placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The jawbone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for the new tooth. For most patients, they are the go-to permanent solution for missing teeth, and they can last a lifetime if cared for properly. In fact, according to Osseo News, the success rate for dental implants in natural bone is 95%, although this rate falls to 85-90% in grafted bone.

In reality, we expect dental implants to be a permanent solution for missing or chipped teeth. However, if an implant becomes infected or other problems arise, there are devices that facilitate their removal. Furthermore, reimplantations can be performed successfully, but their survival rate appears to be lower than that of implants placed at sites from which they were not lost formerly.

Implants are best placed with patients that have healthy gums with strong, adequate bone structure around the tooth. If this isn’t the case, we can perform grafting to assist the retention of the implant.
