The 9 Most Common Dental Problems: Mouth Sores

Patient’s Dental Dictionary: Amalgam

Where Do Cavities Come From?

It’s no surprise that dental problems can emerge from a variety of places: the wrong foods, genetics, a chipped tooth from a football game that results in a root canal in the future. One of the most important things we can do as practitioners is to help patients engage with and deeply understand their own health, including why these problems emerge and what we can to do treat them. It’s for this effort that we examine the nine most common dental problems that we see on a regular basis.

Problem Four: Mouth Sores

While most people understand that dentists work on teeth, few remember that we take a whole mouth view of the patient whenever we schedule a checkup or consultation.

Therefore, one of the problems that we often look for is mouth sores, which can be a warning sign for other potentially serious conditions in the body. Many mouth sores, such as canker sores (also known as aphthous ulcers) are often just temporary and don’t pose long-term consequences. These ailments, like the Herpes Simplex virus, which causes sores known as fever blisters, are usually not a significant problem unless they last for more than two weeks, at which point you should schedule a time for a checkup with a dentist.

One of the mouth sores that we take a closer look at is oral thrush, also known as Candidiasis. Often found in seniors, this type of sore emerges from a yeast infection and commonly affects babies, diabetes patients, and those suffering from cancer.
