Problem Two: Hairy Tongue
While most people wouldn’t feel comfortable with brown, green, white, or even pink spots on the tongue that appear “hairy” in nature, “hairy tongue” isn’t typically a major health problem, even if it can cause a burning sensation in a few patients.
Hairy tongue occurs in the absence of proper hygiene habits and something abrasive brushing against the tongue. A protein, known as keratin, and a variety of bacteria build up and cause the papilla to become quite long and appear like “hairy” structures. Sometimes, the problem occurs from the heavy use of medications, antibiotics, coffee, tobacco, or tea.
This means that, in most cases, the quickest way to treat hairy tongue is to practice good oral hygiene habits, brushing the teeth and tongue every day to reduce the number of bacteria present in the mouth.
