As dentists, we help patients navigate their health in a variety of areas by offering examinations, treatments, and the support needed to make healthy decisions about oral health. From dental implants to Invisalign, Lumineers to sleep apnea treatments and beyond, we help patients live a healthier life through excellent dentistry. That said, it often surprises patients to learn that our comprehensive approach to oral health also includes the tongue, which is closely analyzed every time we perform a thorough examination. When we look at the tongue, we may be looking for one of these five common problems that can emerge in patients:
Problem One: Glossitis
If we perform an exam and find a tongue that is inflamed and swollen, making the tongue appear smooth, it could very well be glossitis. Glossitis can be caused by poor oral hygiene, infections, irritants like tobacco or alcohol, vitamin deficiencies, dry mouth and more. Glossitis can cause problems chewing and talking. Glossitis can also contribute to a blocked airway in the most extreme cases.
Since the problem can result in significant pain, we recommend making an appointment with a dentist or doctor quickly if you notice a smooth, red, swollen and inflamed tongue.
If you have any questions about glossitis or if you would like to schedule a free consultation, please contact our team or make an appointment. Our incredible staff will give you the best dental care possible.
