What is Burning Mouth Syndrome?

We all struggle with a similar problem: after consuming coffee, wine, tea, berries, cola, and other foods that stain our teeth, our pearly whites aren’t nearly quite as white as they used to be. So we buy tooth whitening kits from the store, or for better results, we see the dentist for professional whitening solutions, such as Zoom! and KöR whitening systems. When you visit our office, we want your results to be as brilliant as possible and last for a long time. For that reason, we’d love to share some ways that you can naturally sustain the benefits of our teeth whitening solutions for a longer period of time:

1. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which can help remove plaque, the cause of yellow stains in the first place. If you’d like to try out this solution, simply place some oil in your mouth and swish it around for about 15-20 minutes. Drink plenty of water afterward.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar contains potassium and calcium, which may make your teeth stronger and help to remove bacteria, and therefore, stains from your teeth. Once again, to experience benefits of apple cider vinegar, dilute it with water and use it as a mouthwash. Be careful to only use apple cider vinegar sparsely, as long-term use can actually cause damage to your enamel.

3. Orange Peels

Hidden within orange peels are many compounds that are also present in many teeth whitening solutions, including glucarate, limonene, pectin, and vitamin C. Peels can be rubbed against your teeth before brushing, but as with apple cider vinegar, the acid content in orange peels is high and can cause damage to enamel if used too often.

4. Turmeric

While turmeric might appear to be a strange option for natural whitening due to its dark color, it actually is beneficial for preventing gum disease and controlling plaque buildup.

As you probably already know, the best thing you can do to maintain white teeth is to reduce your consumption of foods and drinks that stain teeth, as well as maintaining excellent oral hygiene by brushing twice daily, flossing every night, and using a proper mouthwash.
