Summer is certainly one of the best times of the year. Even here in sunny California, the summer months provide a special opportunity to do outdoor activities with family and friends. However, some of these activities bring unique risks to our teeth if we don’t take the proper precautions. Therefore, if you find yourself becoming more active during the summer months, we think you should keep the following tips in mind to protect your teeth and maintain your dental health:
1. Wear a Mouthguard
If you choose to play more competitive sports during the summer, such as basketball, football, or soccer, use a mouthguard to protect your teeth. If you do end up chipping or fracturing a tooth, it’s important to receive a checkup quickly to diagnose the issue and define a treatment plan.
2. Swim in the Ocean
Swimming in a highly chlorinated pool can potentially cause damage to your enamel, based on a study by the American Journal of Epidemiology. The ocean is close to use here in San Diego, it doesn’t contain chlorine, and the salt can actually help manage the bacteria in our mouth, making the ocean a fun option for swimming this summer.
3. Reduce Sports Drinks
Sports drinks are famous for causing terrible dental health problems in competitive athletes. Due to their high levels of sugar and acid, sports drinks can be bad for your teeth. Instead, opt for a different electrolyte replacement product, such as dissolving tabs for your regular water.
This summer is bound to be full of fun times, and if you follow these precautions, you’ll have a higher chance of maintaining your beautiful smile throughout the summer and for years to come.
