5 Reasons for Bleeding Gums

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is a constant experience for each of us in the morning, or after coffee, garlic, or spicy food. But there are some causes, recently shared by Oprah magazine, that are sure to surprise you. Here’s a few causes that you might want to be aware of:

1. Stuffy Nose

A stuffy nose forces us to inhale and exhale through our mouths. This dries out the tissues and reduces the flow of saliva. Less saliva means more bacteria and, therefore, more odor. While it may be challenging to avoid a stuff nose, the best preventative option is to thoroughly wash your hands with soap many times a day.

2. Low-carb diet

Diets low in carbohydrates often rely heavily on protein for calories. When our bodies metabolize a high amount of protein, we produce a by-product of ammonia, called ketones, that are released in your breath. The best treatment? Eat a well-balanced diet with the right amount of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.

3. Gram Negatives

Gram negatives are a type of bacteria that live in your mouth. Gram negatives produce sulfuric compounds that smell rotten. The biggest problem with gram-negatives is that their extra cell layer makes them persistent and hard to destroy. The best method is to disrupt them by flossing and brushing your tongue on a regular basis.

If you find yourself with consistent halitosis (bad breath), we recommend that you avoid these causes, drink plenty of water, and see our office if the problem persists.
